Legacy: Making Things Better for Those You Touch
Legacy: Making Things Better for Those You Touch
When we think about legacy, it’s easy to get caught up in grand ideas of changing the world or achieving monumental feats. But, for me, I am still waiting for the calling or idea that has that kind of potential. So, in the meantime my thoughts around legacy start simple: It’s about the people you impact and the spaces you touch.
As I reflect on what legacy I want to leave, I think about my wife, Mandi, and our kids first and foremost. I hope I can guide them to make their mark on the world in a way that’s meaningful to them.
Years ago, I participated in an exercise where we were asked to write our own eulogy. It’s a wild thought experiment that really makes you think about what kind of impact you want to leave. At the time, I wasn’t trying to change the world. Instead, I wanted people to remember that I made things better. Whether it was the company I ran, the cars I worked on, or the real estate I developed. I wanted to leave a positive imprint wherever I went.
It wasn’t about thinking big enough to land on Mars, but more about looking at the people and things around me and asking, “How can I make this better?” It was about the small, tangible things - the impact I could have on my environment and those I worked with.
And that’s really the core of what we do in our business. Every day, we take bad situations and make them better. Whether it’s fixing a damaged car or improving someone’s experience, we try to leave people in a better place than we found them.
So, when you think about your own legacy, it doesn’t have to be about grand gestures. It can be about making your corner of the world better. Making the people you encounter feel like their lives are a little better for having known you. That’s the kind of legacy I want to leave, and I hope it serves as inspiration for others to do the same.
Remember, it’s not about changing the world in one big move. It’s about making the world you touch better, one step at a time
